A Christmas Song (1843) by Charles Dickens is a Christmas novella that depicts the change of Ebenezer Penny pincher from somebody who loathes Christmas, generosity and cheer into somebody who grasps these things.

Tightwad's change is set into movement by the apparition of his late accomplice, Jacob Marley, who reveals to Miser what the remainder of the night has available for him. The phantom of Jacob Marley is depicted as being shackled in apparently inevitable chains. Also, his head and jaw are bound together by a collapsed cloth. In spite of the fact that there is no immediate reference to the reason for Marley's passing, this depiction permits some derivation. While the chains, as Marley says, are a consequence of the manner in which he carried on with his life, the tissue is by all accounts rest of his lethal minutes. It is conceivable that Marley kicked the bucket due to some damage or disease identified with his head. Almost certainly, some ailment or disease couldn't be dealt with and declined, at last, causing his demise.]
